Have you ever wanted to try sitting behind a pottery wheel to make your own creation? You can try it during your stay in Tangalle!
Just a short tuktuk ride away from Tangalle, there is a pottery wonderland that you can visit. In true Sri-Lankan style, the pottery studio is very rustic and located outside underneath a thatched palm leaf roof.
First, you can watch a local pottery-maker in their element. You can see how effortlessly they hone their craft to make many pots, bowls and vases – with up to 100 being made per day! Then once you have watched a professional give the illusion that it’s easy to do, you can try it for yourself. Unless you are already a well-practised pottery-maker, you will probably find it difficult to start with.
After some time and some help from the pottery-makers, you will get the hang of it and be able to make whatever you desire. You can just enjoy the experience and turn your experimental designs back into clay, or if you want something to take home, you can decide what size. Perhaps you want something big to decorate your home or something small to fit in your backpack and carry as a momento from your time in Tangalle. If you want to buy something made by a professional, there is also a shop located just next door, selling everything from vases to sculptures.
If you made something yourself then your pottery masterpiece will need to dry and to be heated by flame in a kiln. You should allow around a week for this to be done and then you can return and collect it to take onwards with you on your journey, all the way back home!
